What are the keys to starting a successful business?

I am planning to start a bakery in Charleston, Folly Beach, and I need some help. I have some information such as my Competition, my prices and such… and about good food, well I am going to college at the Culinary Institute of Charleston for Pastry's and Southern foods and minoring in business at Trident. But i need help… what are the tabs of starting a business such as the simple stuff like coming up with a name to loans. OR non-profit, please any answers help to my knowledge.

Based on your question alone, if you are planning to start soon, you will fail. By all means, you are not ready. Take this as constructive criticism.
However you are taking the steps. Some people are born business savy, others take schooling and intensive research to get where they want to go.
Before I ventured out on my own, I THOUGHT I was ready but I really wasn't. You can have all the money in the world to start up but in order for that business to survive it takes A LOT of work on your part. Be ready to work 10-16 hours a day 7 days a week. Your business may close at closing time but when you get home there is still work to do such as tallying up receipts, payroll, all that good stuff.
You are going to school to learn to make your product, but a course in business management, accounting, etc will help you tremendously.
I started my business in 2004 and did not see a profit until the fall of 2006. Consider having cash reserves during the 'break in' period and when times are tough as they are now.
Hats off to you for making the decision to venture out on your own! You can do it. But do it wisely.

Perhaps, for example, you are spending too much on utility bills and need to research other suppliers.

Maybe you need to begin to reduce our shopping bill by purchasing our groceries at a cheaper supermarket. You can save a lot of money by shopping later in the day when many shops offer products at greatly reduced prices. It is vitally important that you are honest with yourself about every expenditure in order that you can tell where every penny is going as this budget will be the basis for all your financial decisions.

You may discover that you can make reductions in many areas of our finances and still have room for a few luxuries. Be realistic about cut backs as you’re more likely to stick to it if for example you still have some budget for entertainment etc. Reducing debt or reducing your expenditure doesn’t necessarily mean completely going without although perhaps you cannot afford to be as frivolous as you once were.

Goal setting can be a useful and motivational part of budgeting. As you set goals and begin to see them come to fruition you are encouraged to continue sticking to our reduced budget.

Perhaps you are saving for a new car, holiday or something less expensive. Whatever, the goal, you are far more likely to achieve it by sensible cutting back and budgeting.

If you are cutting back due to debt, goal setting can be just as rewarding as you see the debt reduce. It can also be empowering as getting into debt can make us feel helpless and worried. You can get into debt when you bury our head in the sand and take on more financial commitment than you can afford. Good, honest budgeting gives us back some control and is a good habit for everyone to adopt.

If you have debt or are struggling to make payments, it is important to contact creditors sooner rather than later. They are far more approachable and helpful if you get in touch with them as soon as you realise there is a problem rather than waiting until things spiral out of control.

If you have a partner or family it is important to get them on board as cutting back on your expenses is far more successful when you have the cooperation of others.

Also loan applicants now have to meet the strict guidelines set out by the lender in order to qualify for a loan. This has led to many people no longer qualifying for a loan.

Availability of loan funds

Another problem the financial crisis presents for loans is the availability of funds to lend. Due to the overwhelming amounts of defaults that has occurred over the last two years lenders are not receiving any new money and therefore do not have new funds to lend. Oftentimes the defaulting on loans results in the borrowers assets being sold by the lender at well below premium in an effort to earn some money from the loan.

The financial crisis has caused a slow down if not an almost stop in lending and if lending is done the cost or interest rates are higher than normal. Also the slowdown is attributed to the fact that many potential borrowers are unable to afford a loan hence they do not apply for one. Once they use a loan calculator and see what their monthly installments would likely be, they do not pursue a loan anymore.
